Props & Costumes.

For the costume, we decided to keep it more simple and realistic. She is wearing a Barbour jacket and a combination of Hunter wellies and Uggs. We chose these clothes because at the time of our filming, the weather was cold, windy and wet. Our filming is located in the countryside of Scotland so the clothing suits the surroundings and scenery. Therefore, giving her a more natural look. The natural look appeals to a larger audience.
We have chosen not to use any props because in this case we feel that it does not fit with the song or the genre and is not necessary as it is not a key element to similar music videos.

Cast

IMOGEN ROSS

We have chosen to use Imogen Ross as our main protagonist in our music video. We have chosen her as we find her best suited to the style and genre that we are aiming to portray. Imogen's most complimentary features would be her eyes/mouth and hair. Bright blue eyes attract major attention and the use of nice eyes can tell a story of their own. Imogen's mouth will be used for the lip sync so having a nice smile and straight teeth adds to the shot. Mid-length wavy/curly hair is a stereotypical look for this kind of genre and style and also complies with our audience members when relating back to UKTribes.

The other reasons for choosing to work with Imogen would be the practicality of us living with one another as timings work out and make the filming easier being comfortable around one another. Imogen is also a drama and dance students adding to the key pointers as to why we would choose her.

MATT LINTER

We have chosen to use Matt Linter as the character that the song is about and that Imogen is in love with. The reason we chose to use Matt is because he has prominent eyes, which are attractive and create a striking single shot. Furthermore, his eyes are similar to Imogen's which connects them as well as being a constant throughout as that is one of the reasons we chose to use Imogen.

We also feel that Matt fits the genre of our music video as he has quite a simple look and is therefore good to work with.

Location

We have planned where we will be shooting our video. After discussing various different places to shoot our film we have decided to keep the locations to a minimum and have only chosen about 5 different areas to film. All of the footage is going to be shot on campus as it becomes difficult trying to film outside of school due to everyone involved living very far apart making it impossible for us all to be in the same place at one time. However some of the footage will be taken whilst on a plane which will be the establishing shot at the beginning of the video.

Shot List

Opening shot is shot from a plane. This sets the scene using an establishing shot. Below is green land and mountains, a countryside setting.
Second shot is of the protagonists lips. Imogen the main character in our film is singing along to the lyrics.
Third shot is of Imogen walking through puddles. Her face will not be shown directly at the beginning to add some suspense.
Fourth shot is back to lip sync, we want to keep this as a repetitive feature.
Fifth shot is of the back of Imogen looking out to the countryside. Still no showing of her face to keep the suspense flowing.
Sixth shot is of Imogen sitting on a wall. We will either shoot this from the back of her or if shot from the front will use effects so that you can not make out her facial features.

Seventh shot is back to the lip sync keeping it repetitive.
Eighth shot will be stop motion of an small object which will create a love heart. This is to represent the genre of love.
Ninth shot will be of words being written on screen. This will be filmed on a word document capturing the words being slowly typed on screen, then edited to speed up the typing to fit with the lyrics.
Tenth shot, back to lip sync again.
Eleventh shot, close up of the dogs face to give recognition to the viewer to introduce the new character.
Twelfth shot will be of Imogen and the dog meeting. Showing the bond between humans and animals.

Thirteenth shot will be once again back to lip sync.
Fourteen shot will be of Imogen and the dog walking off together into a field or through a field.
Fifteenth shot will be back to lip sync again.
Sixteenth shot will be of the boy that Imogen is in love with and the song is all about. However he wont stay on screen for long as he is a mystery on until the end of the song.
Seventeenth shot will be of Imogen face after the boy being on screen, she will not be as happy as she is drawn in the picture above.
Eighteenth shot will be the final shot of Imogen walking away with her back to the camera, walking into the field almost out of eye shot.

Themes

There are a couple of themes that run throughout our music video.
The most obvious is young love, which we decided was suitable because of our choice of song which is to do with love. This is shown with the stop motion shot of the heart as well as the red tint which we decided to use as red is the colour of love. This leads to the playfulness which is displayed from our main character, Imogen, in the way that she smiles, waves and interacts with the camera as well as the jumping around with the dog. We also felt that the lighting is relatable to the happiness of young love in the way that there are several shots during our music of the sun shining. The other would be the secretiveness that was difficult to display but it is shown in the way that the beginning of the video is about a mystery girl until just before the chorus where there is the first shot of her face. This is connected to the male character in the way that the first shot of him is when the camera slowly moves from his feet up his body. This shot cuts just as the camera reaches his mouth, meaning that the mystery of who the male character that the song is about is kept till the very end.

6 main sections

STOP MOTION

We realised we needed to add another feature to our film to make it stand out. We came up with the idea of making a love heart out a counters. Using the colour scheme of black/white and red. We editing the shots to make it a fast piece of editing to signify the change in tempo as the chorus beings.
I really like this feature of our film as it is different yet a very simple extra with a lot of potential.

LIP SYNC

Lip sync is commonly used throughout different genres of music videos. It creates more of a connection between the audience and the singer and allows the audience to relate to the singer and the lyrics as it removes distraction from anything else. This has been a difficult part to the editing process as it requires a lot of time and concentration to get the footage to coincide with the song.

COLOUR SCHEME

We have decided that we are going to have a colour scheme running through the music video. The colour schemes consists of the majority of the footage being in black and white and then adding the occasional tint of red. We think this works well with our choice of song as the song is about love which can be easily related to the colour. We have used black and white because it allows the red to stand out. Also, the black and white enables the audience to focus more on the song and actions of our main character instead of being distracted by colours.

TEXT

The use of text in our music video enhances the lyrics. We feel that the line in the chorus 'I'll never be his own' is sygnificant because of the meaning and the repetitiveness throughout the song. By singling the line out from the rest, as well as it being a plain and simple shot with distraction removed, causes it to be the focus of attention.

DUPLICATED SHOTS

We have chosen to split the screen into duplicated shots because we are very fond of the lip syncing, and this was a way that we came up with to vary the shot of the mouth. The whole video is quite simplistic in comparison to this shot, which we liked because we were looking to add some more variety.

DOG

This key element is a symplistic way to symbolise Imogen's love for a man, considering the song is to do with love. We chose to use a dog because it is known as 'man's best friend' and therefore is more relatable to a male figure.

We also believe that the dog is in upkeeping with the playful theme running through our video and fits in well with the setting and country feel portrayed throughout.

Lyrics with specific shots

Oh, oh                                       Establishing shot...

Can we hold hands                           sets the scene (countryside)
If it's cold outside
Do it if you can                          Lip syncing (mostly all the way through)
Just don't feel obliged
Are we in love?                          High angle shot...
Maybe in my mind                               of walking through a puddle
Are we in love?
We can compromise                   Long shots...
I can't be strong, oh, oh                       of protagonist walking
But babe, I'll try
'Cause I'll never be your own        Close up...
of the first shot of her face
Even if I stole him, control him,     Stop motion...
Dictate him, indoctrinate him                of heart
Fix him, convince him                    (more lip sync)
I'll never be his own                       Shot of typing on computer screen
Even if he stole me, control me,    (more lip sync)
Dictate me, indoctrinate me
Fix me, convince me
I'll never be his own                     Shot of typing on computer screen
Can we change hands                   Close up...
Can I change your mind?                      of dogs face
Change your plans
You know I can't change mine       Long shot...
'Cause I'm in love                                 of protagonist and dog
 I think I'm tied
Yes I'm in love                              (more lip sync)
With my other side
I can't be strong, oh, oh,               Several long shots...
But babe, I'll try                                   of protagonist and dog playing

'Cause I'll never be your own                   lip sync
'Cause you'll never be my own
'Cause I'll never be your own
'Cause you will never be my own
'Cause I'll never be your own

Even if I stole him, control him,             Stop motion...
Dictate him, indoctrinate him                       of heart
Fix him, convince him                           (more lip sync)
I'll never be his own                              Shot of typing on computer screen

Secondary Research

Channel 4 claims to know their audience, that's what keeps them top of mind when it comes to being seen as trend setting, innovative, controversial (in a good way), creating new programmes that others copy and ground breaking by ABC1 16-44s.

Their research and insight team work hard to reveal the intricacies of our marketplace.
It's their role to answer questions like how do 16-24s see themselves; who likes which programmes ; how can brands maximize their returns from advertising on Channel 4 and how do different platforms affect viewing?
Key researched information points:
  • Females are significantly more likely to spend money on clothes and socialising whereas males are more likely to spend on gadgets and computer games.
  • Males are significantly more likely to be engaging with online activity.
  • BBC1 and E4 are the two most popular channels for 14-19 year olds.
  • iPlayer and 4oD are the most popular TV services for watching/downloading programs on demand.
  • Future financial stability and job prospects were a worry for all, even the younger age groups, triggered by the current economic climate.
  • Cyber bullying and issues of cyber safety were big concerns for girls.
  • Boys were particularly concerned about personal hygiene.

The above are different ways in which the company have investigated and explored general information about their audiences, taken from the general public.

Certain aspects of their findings we could also use to gain knowledge of our audiences preferences, likes and dislikes. All feedback is positive feedback of which we can gain an all-round picture of what is needed to present a good music video, showing that we have taken our audiences point of view into account.

UK Tribes

We used UK Tribes to find out what group our audience member came out as. The group was Indie Scenester. There is defiantly some significant traits in this group that we can link to our perfect audience member. Explained below are the general traits of an 'Indie Scenester'.

Clothes: The general style is found in smaller more reserved stores that stock trendy exclusive items. Vintage stores are something that is visited regularly. Woolen sweaters, tight jeans, brogues and patterned scarves are must have items for your closet, applying to both boys and girls. High street shops are not something that is shopped in often due to the common clothing. The style is unique and most outfits are that of only individual people.
Hobbies: Interests and hobbies do not involve particular things. Reading classic books as well as analysing them.  Enjoying literature as it allows you to fully take in a variety of different views, opinions, times and scenarios. Art & photography would also be of great interest. Following up on fashion trends to keep style up to date. Going to the cinema to watch a brand new movie or just chilling out with some wine at home. Going out and having a good time with friends is something that always surrounds.
Music: Music is vital; it ties in with the fashion & art scene, and is always a great outlet for creative and individual expression.  Ones own genre of music ranging from many different genres and artists. Those with a low profile but great talent are extremely appealing. Mainstream music that everyone listens to is not a initial favourite. However there is appreciation for classics such as The Beatles, The Beach Boys and Oasis. Music is very dependent on the mood.
General Attitudes: A very chilled out and relaxed vibe. Generally happy personality, individual and doesn’t follow a crowd. No strict political and religious views making them independent with their beliefs. Open minded towards the rest of society. Mostly just up for chilling with friends and having a good time, whilst enjoying having the necessities in life.

Audience Research

After constructing a questionnaire we asked several people to take part.

These are results from doing so:

What attracts you to music?
The majority of people said that they were attracted to the rhythm and the beat of the music. Several people, mostly females, said that they were more interested in the lyrics and the meaning of the song, depending on their mood.

Do videos make a difference?
Many people said that they were less interested in the video because the majority of the time when listening to music, you’re not actually watching the video. But out of the people that watch music channels, the majority said that if a song they didn’t like came on, they were more likely to continue watching it simply for the music video.

What do you like about music videos?
A lot of people, mostly males, said that they were more interested in the people in the video than anything else. Another commonly liked attribute is the dancing involved in the video but that varies to the genre of music. A few people also said that they were attracted to the atmosphere being created by the video.

What do you like dislike about music videos?
The majority of people said that they were put off by unoriginality when all music videos follow similar themes. Another thing that people didn’t like was repetitiveness throughout a video.

9 Key Shots

We have looked at the music video Your Song by Ellie Goulding and taken 9 key shots from the video which we have found inspiration towards the ideas leading up to our final piece.

Top row:

The top left is a still of lip syncing.

These three pictures are all relatable to the music.

The top middle is of somebody playing the piano during the song.

We think this is key because it is commonly done within music videos, also it is advantageous to music videos because it enhances the actual song by focusing on it.

We are inspired by the lip syncing because we are keen to use lip sync as technique in our video. We are also drawn to the lighting in the first shot as it creates a beautiful image and is well suited to the song.

Middle left:

This single shot displays the colour that is continuous throughout her video. There are several shots of random things without Ellie Goulding in the image, such as a train ticket, rooftops which are all shown in a similar lighting effect. We like this because it is sweet and adds to the variety.

Middle:

One of the only shots in the video that shows her from head to toe, showing surroudings and her outfit. We feel that this is important because it says a lot about the video in the way that it shows the country location, enhanced by the winter outfit.

Middle right:

Good use of colour and clothing. We think that the clothing is very important as it portrays an image of Ellie Goulding. Here, she is dressed in a colouful jumper which we think portrays a very sweet image which is in correlation with the song. We think that we could also relate this to our video.

Bottom left:

We think that the use of an animal is a key part in her video. We like it because it goes along with playfulness and creates a light hearted atmosphere. This is continued in the bottom right.

Bottom right:

This is a still shot of her messing around on the train. We also think that this is key because it shows a different location to the other shots, adding more variety.

Bottom middle:

This is key because it displays the interaction between Ellie Goulding and the camera. We think that this follows the theme throughout her video. We like it because it is not extremely common in music video, which differentiates it from other videos.

'After Dark' Textual Analysis.

The second music video I have chosen to analysis for inspiration and ideas is The Count & Sinden featuring Mystery Jets - After Dark. This music video is slightly more relevant to our style genre due to the links to space and outrageous outfits. I am going to look at the cinematography, mise en scene, editing and sound of this video and comment on certain features I like best.

The start of the music video is actually very clever as it starts by introducing all of the characters that appear in the video. The only sound that is heard throughout is that of the song, no diagetic or non diagetic music is used. The beginning scene is the stereotypical band playing together against a white background. I do like this as it allows the band to stand out from any other surrounding features.

The style of costumes used are vintage and exciting which lightens the overall feel of the video and complimenting the energy portrayed. The camera work is fast and shoots different sections such as the lead signers feet and the up to his face. This is used quite widely in music videos and has become a rather effective shot despite their being no real relevance to the video.

The mood of the video is exciting and humorous. The video hasn’t been taken seriously. There is only one disadvantage to this. There is a story going on in the background which slightly takes the attention away from the song. One of the parts I do really like is how there are different dancers presenting very different styles of dances to judges and towards the end they all merge their styles together into one act. This surprisingly works incredibly well.

One effect I did really like was whilst the dancers are dancing a harsh light has been put upon them from behind creating a shadow, which is then shot from the front at a low angle. This is a very different effect which worked very well and something I would like to recreate in our music video if possible.

'A Team' Textual Analysis.

One of the videos I have chosen to look at for inspiration and ideas is A Team – Ed Sheeran. The genre of the music is not the style we have chosen to use, yet the initial concept of the video is something we do hope to use in our music video. I’m going to look at the Cinematography, Mise en Scene, Editing and Sound of the video.

The video starts with setting the scene and presenting the main character. The entire video is shot in black and white only using lighting effects to enhance or darken sections of the scenes. I personally really like the concept of this effect, using a modern setting such as the city of London.

The camera work in the very begging is extremely important as it gives a mixture of long shots, mid shots and close up shots to introduce the main character and also allows the audience to judge and take their first impressions. The main character is lying on a park bench wrapped in a blanket, looking rather rough with makeup down her face and ruffled hair. The costume she is wearing is quite revealing making it very suggestive.

Throughout the video the scenes go on to show the character walking around the streets of London. It gives a basic outline to the story of her life. This is attention to detail is appreciated by the audience as it allows them to make an initial judgment after their first impressions at the very start.

Close ups of her face draws attention to her emotions and struggles. Certain sections which stand out to me are the use of focus pulls. The effect of having the focus on only the main character and all other surrounds blurred is something I hope to use in our video. I think this is extremely effective as it allows the most important part of the scene to be focused on and not that of the dancers or extras in the background.

My favourite part of this music video is the scene where the main character has her back to the camera, shot at mid shot as she is stood by the railing cross road section watching the traffic go by. This has been edited to speed up the traffic and surrounding pedestrians, focusing on only the characters emotions. This shows how the world is going by and she is standing still and showing her invisibility to the rest of the community.

I really like the overall concept of this music video. The scruffy main character represented in 2 different ways and how only lighting and makeup has changed her overall appearance. There are no significant special effects which make this video easy to relate to which is important for the audience.
